Negotiating noise is a condition of living in a populated environment. Since much of the noise is the result of making modern living possible, Alex Braidwood is not concerned with canceling or eliminating noise. Instead, his work explores methods for transforming the relationship between people and the noise in their environment. He draws inspiration from a variety of fields of study to develop the questions his work investigates. Using and conducting research to create functional experiments is the basis of Alex’s artistic practice. His process of research-through-making centers around learning in order to make and then making in order to learn. Throughout this discovery process, his projects develop in various forms including interactive installations, wearable devices and mobile applications. By engaging with these projects, a listener, relationship to the noise surrounding them changes. The noise becomes something less undesirable, in some cases beautiful, by being rendered differently familiar.
