Sadie SiegelAs a form of gathering, Karaoke both encourages and restricts expression by following the templates of popular songs performed in semi-private settings. This installation is an attempt to create a sort of pop-music open score partly aimed at improvisation, partly at re-enacting and exploding a set of social conventions. Guests will be familiar with the format (Karaoke) but will be asked to confront a catalog of unknown songs written specifically for the event. Most people have probably sung Karaoke, or watched someone while shuddering in amusement. In the case of Karaoke Roulette, a “correct” way to perform is eliminated, increasing the potential for guests to impress onlookers with their ability to interpret unknown but familiar songs.
