In her past life Francene Kaplan thought of “art” as having to be objects of magnificence that all would agree to as being worthy. That feeling dissipated and she saw that the reward was in the creation process and the appreciation of the audience/participants. Kaplan works with sound at fundamental levels, to express how tonal qualities can be elicited simply. She also helps kids and teens appreciate sound art and to help them explore their potential in this medium.
With Rubber Box Orchestra Dr. Kaplan invites participants to play boxes with rubber bands, strumming random twangs to songs we all know. Move the rubber band such that it is tighter across the opening of the container. You can even pluck and then move the rubber band and listen to the sound changing continuously getting all of the 1/8th.
